Taylor Clapp is a civil litigator who focuses on all aspects of insurance coverage and insurance defense.

Mr. Clapp has handled insurance defense cases in a variety of contexts ranging from complex construction defect cases representing a variety of contractors, premises liability cases, and motor vehicle accidents. He also routinely handles and advises insurance carriers in many areas regarding coverage matters including an insurance carrier’s duty to defend and indemnify complex and novel areas of coverage developing in Colorado.

Mr. Clapp also has extensive appellate experience, having written and argued briefs in front of the Colorado Court of Appeals and Colorado Supreme Court in a range of matters.

Prior to joining JPK, Taylor worked at the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s Office as a Deputy District Attorney and handled a wide array of criminal prosecutions – from misdemeanor DUIs all the way to attempted homicides. During his tenure, he tried over 15 jury trials to verdict as first chair. While at the DA’s Office, Taylor took sole responsibility for petitioning and arguing in front of the Colorado Supreme Court on a novel legal issue. The Colorado Supreme Court affirmed his reasoning in People v. Kembel, 2023 CO 5. Prior to working for the Eighth Judicial DA’s Office, Taylor clerked for the Hon. Susan Blanco. Taylor also worked for the firm as a summer associate, where he helped Andy draft a response brief in a case where the Colorado Court of Appeals affirmed a large judgement in favor of a client.

Some Achievements Include:

  • Affirmed Attorneys’ Fee award before Colorado Court of Appeals in dispute between Homeowner and Homeowners Association regarding Association Elections in dispute of fees pursuant to the Colorado Common Interest Ownership Act (“CCIOA”).
  • Affirmed dismissal of negligence claims as time-barred before Colorado Court of Appeals with a recovery of fees and costs.
  • Affirmed summary judgment ruling before Colorado Court of Appeals on behalf of a property management company in dispute over interpretation of community bylaws.
  • Petitioned Colorado Supreme Court on novel legal theory pursuant to C.A.R. 21, which resulted in a published opinion – 2023 CO 5 – People v. Kembel.
  • Affirmed large six-figure damages award in commercial breach of contract case.
  • Defense verdict in premises liability slip and fall bench trial on behalf of a commercial car wash operator.

Taylor graduated Cum Laude from Creighton University in 2018 where he was a Student Articles Editor of the Creighton Law Review. Taylor received his B.A. in English from Regis University here in Denver, Colorado. When not in the office, Taylor enjoys fly fishing and chasing his very busy children. Taylor is also a Commissioner for the Eighth Judicial District’s Judicial Performance Commission, which evaluates and recommends Colorado judges for retention during election years.
